Scaling Circular and Sharing Economy Initiatives: A Bottom-Up Approach to Urban Sustainability and Transformation at SCORAI Europe 2025

The TransScale project proudly participated in the SCORAI Europe 2025 conference, where Janis Brizga from the BA School of Business presented the topic, “Scaling Circular and Sharing Economy Initiatives: A Bottom-Up Approach to Urban Sustainability and Transformation.”

The presentation took place from April 8-10, 2025, at the SCORAI Europe Conference in Lund, Sweden. It focused on the role of municipalities, communities, and NGOs in scaling urban Circular and Sharing Economy (CSE) initiatives. As cities worldwide grapple with resource scarcity, environmental degradation, and socio-economic challenges, the TransScale project provided valuable insights on overcoming barriers and scaling CSE initiatives. The goal was to foster sustainable urban transitions by closing material loops, enhancing resource efficiency, and promoting socio-economic resilience.

Key Topics Covered:

  • Challenges in Scaling CSE Initiatives: The session addressed the barriers to scaling such initiatives, including regulatory constraints, economic barriers, and lack of awareness.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: It explored how various stakeholders, from local governments to businesses and NGOs, can work together to promote circular practices at a larger scale.
  • Insights on Social and Economic Sustainability: The session highlighted how CSE initiatives contribute to long-term social equity, resource efficiency, and sustainability.
  • The Role of Governance: The presentation discussed how municipalities can foster the growth of circular practices by creating supportive policy frameworks.

Participants:

The session engaged a range of stakeholders, including national and local government representatives, NGOs, businesses, researchers, and community leaders. Insights from the presentation aimed to inform strategies for enhancing urban sustainability by scaling up CSE initiatives, making cities more resilient and resource-efficient.

Anticipated Impact:

This research aimed to provide actionable insights for policymakers, urban planners, and other stakeholders involved in shaping sustainable cities. By addressing both the enablers and barriers to scaling CSE practices, the project contributed significantly to the circular economy discourse, offering strategies to enhance resource efficiency, social equity, and long-term urban sustainability.

The SCORAI Europe 2025 conference served as an excellent platform for sharing these insights and fostering collaboration among European cities working towards a more sustainable and circular future.
